Die Stadt
Program Notes
Die Stadt is a piece modeled after a Kunstlied, a type of art song that sets text to music, typically with a voice part and instrumental accompaniment. The text is translated from Heinrich Heine’s poem of the same name. Originally sketched a few years back, it has been reworked and polished, giving the text a beautifully rich setting. The beginning is mysterious and misty like the evening twilight before the wind picks up as the piano swells with huge sweeping arpeggios. The calm returns as all sounds fade into the mist.
